Carolyn Driedger

M.S.

Carolyn Driedger, M.S., is a Hydrologist with the US Geological Survey (USGS). Carolyn has worked for USGS since 1978 and at the Survey’s Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO) since 1990.  She focuses her studies on glacier floods and volcanic hazards caused by snow and ice on Cascade volcanoes. Most recently, Carolyn is spearheading an effort to inform public officials, emergency planners and educators in communities at risk about volcanic hazards. Prior to her work with USGS, Carolyn taught Earth Science for 3 years at Chambersburg Jr High School in Pennsylvania. Since 1982 she has developed and taught more than two-dozen workshops about geology for the general public and for teachers. She has written and published a multitude of professional articles, books, and other publications for scientific journals, conferences, educators, the general public and other audiences, mostly about Cascade volcanoes, glaciers, and geohazards. She is a primary scientists working on Mount Rainier geologic issues.

Carolyn is a member of the Mount Rainier Volcanic Hazards Work Group and principal project staff for the curriculum that is the basis for this course. This teacher workshop has evolved through the years from a partial-day mini-workshop to a full four-day workshop.
